    The Evolution of Entrepreneurial Competencies: A Longitudinal Study of University Spin-Off Venture Emergence

    This paper aims to better understand the development of entrepreneurial competencies to create new ventures within the non-commercial academic environment. We build upon the evolutionary perspective considering where resources come from to help define these competencies and explain their paths of development. The study follows the creation and early growth of four university spin-offs within the UK and Norway. We identified three competencies of opportunity refinement, leveraging, and championing that appeared crucial for the ventures to gain credibility. Although selected competencies were inherent within the academic founders, the specific competencies for venture creation had to be developed or acquired. This was achieved iteratively through entrepreneurial experience and accessing competencies from disparate actors such as industry partners and equity investors. Propositions are offered to guide future empirical research based upon our framework

    Putting pedagogy where intention to innovate lies: evaluating compulsory entrepreneurship education

    The growing interest in entrepreneurship education has caused a debate about pedagogy can support intention to innovate. Drawing on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), we examine the links between experiential pedagogy and students' intention to innovate and entrepreneurial intent. Using structural equation modeling on a survey of 361 students of compulsory entrepreneurship education across public and private universities, we find that: (a) regardless university type out-of-class experiences and engaged faculty generate positive behavioral control and attitude towards entrepreneurship; (b) out-of-class experiences significantly increases intentions to innovate; (c) behavioral control mediates the relationship between out-of-class experiences and changes in intention to innovate. (d) university type – public or private – has no direct significant effect on the students intention to innovate.     A machine tool must be able to produce high-quality product. But a skilled operator also required. The process of workpiece production begins with planning a logical working steps, such as: specifying the type of machine tool’s process and selecting the materials to be used. The production process is not only related to the technology, but also related to  the cost factor and the production speed to achieve the target and optimum profits. In the tensile test, the specimen is standardized according to the tensile machine that will be used. The shape of the tested specimen is essential in order to avoid cracking or facture in the grip or others areas. The purpose of this study are determining the average time of machining proces and getting the total cost of production of machining process of a tensile test specimen. The tensile test specimen were subjected on this experiment has a circular cross-sectiolan shape which made from concrete steel with the lathe machining proces. Based on the result of the process of time and cost calculation, the tensile test specimens has an average machining time of 161,733 minutes per specimen and the cost Rp. 63.483 per specimen.     Rowing against the wind: how do times of austerity shape academic entrepreneurship in unfriendly environments?

    [EN] Academic spin-offs (ASOs) help universities transfer knowledge or technology through business projects developed by academic staff. This investigation aims at analyzing the critical factors for spin-off creation at universities operating in crisis-raven, entrepreneurship-unfriendly environments. Such factors revolve around four types of resources: environmental, institutional, organizational, and personal. Focusing on a Southern European context, as an example of an unfriendly environment affected by economic crisis, an entrepreneurial university (the Technical University of Valencia in Spain, UPV) is our research setting. Through a case study approach, we examine the potential of UPV as a springboard for ASOs. Our results show an adverse local environment, a rather favorable influence of institutional and organizational drivers, and a mixed role of personal factors. Our findings illustrate that UPV consistently supports spin-off creation due to a greater (rather positive) reflexivity from its institutional, organizational and personal resources than the (negative) imprinting of the unfriendly environment. This helps counter-balance the structural unfriendliness for academic entrepreneurship, and trigger a crisis-led risk-taking attitude by academic staff. Hence, UPV should continue with its current strategy of supporting academic entrepreneurship, and might transfer best practices to other universities also affected by unfavorable environmental conditions. Generally speaking, we would advise universities facing adverse circumstances to develop rules and mechanisms for academic entrepreneurship, carefully revise and improve malfunctions, and become involved throughout the whole process of spin-off development.
